So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

Plaquenil is what they prescribe for Lupus, Sjogren's and mild RA, so even though we aren't given the official diagnosis, we are treated the exact same. Plaquenil has been amazing for me. It does take about 3 months to notice any improvement. Plaquenil is used to keep this autoimmune disease at a less active phase- it is not just for joint pains and discoid It helps to also keep the flares less severe - unsure how it works they just know that it does. My lupus affects major body systems and joint pains have not been a big problem for me but it keeps. Basically, plaquenil's effect is to modulate the immune system, which is something that could be quite beneficial for some of us. You can do what you want, but you might want to consider giving plaquenil more of a chance, and be far more wary of the prednisolone prednisone/steroid.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

After just 4 days on Plaquenil, I had severe stomach cramps, no appetite, GERD pain, diarrhea and a migraine. Not sure that the migraine was related but it happened on day 4. After contacting my Rheumatologist, I was told to stop taking the drug. When I asked what other drug I could try. Anti-Malarial drugs. An anti-malarial drug controls lupus in some patients long-term. This requires the patient to be on these drugs for the rest of their lives, and an example is Plaquenil. Side effects associated with the drugs include loss of appetite, retinal damage, dry skin, stomach upset and bloating. The first symptoms of lupus usually occur somewhere between the teen years and the 30s and may be mild, severe, sporadic, or continual. Common general symptoms include fatigue, fever, and hair loss. Lupus can also affect individual organs and body parts, such as the skin, kidneys, and joints.
