    Plaquenil fatigue

In general, it's important to mention this to your prescriber. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil and generics) can itself cause fatigue in some users, it can interrupt sleep patterns (especially by causing more vivid dreams) which in turn makes one more tired.

Is anyone taking Plaquenil and if so, do you find it works for fatigue. Should I just bite the bullet and give it a whirl. I should mention that I believe many of my aches and pain is related to the fact that I am obese especially in hips/knees. I imagine this plays a part in how tired I am at times. Hi, Carole. When I started Plaquenil, my GI system was in an uproar. But it usually was anyway. I didn't realize, until I saw Dr. Wallace's book and found the stats, plus my rheumie telling me much the same, that many people with lupus something like 40% or more "present" with GI problems. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug which is why you take it long term. It honestly takes on average 1 to 3 months to work and be built up in your system, which is why you typically have a 3-6 month review after being prescribed it.

This is especially true in those individuals with G6PD deficiency. The drug can also lower blood counts (red cell, white cells and others too) which in turn can cause fatigue.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Fatigue is a very common complaint among those living with lupus. HSS Rheumatologist, Dr. Jessica Berman indicates that research estimates 40% of lupus patients have persistent severe fatigue, meaning that the fatigue stays for a long period of time. But it seems as though there is more recognition of Sjögren’s as being responsive to many of the same meds used for other autoimmune disorders. What I have noticed is that plaquenil seems to be diagnosed when there is ongoing fatigue and/or joint pain. I know that for me, it made a huge difference in terms of fatigue.
