Antimalarials are usually given as one or two pills, once a day. Side effects include vision changes (blurring, halos around lights and sensitivity to light), headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Individuals taking an antimalarial should have eye examinations periodically.

Psoriasis is found among people who take Plaquenil, especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for 1 - 6 months, also take medication Humira, and have Psoriatic arthropathy. The management of these patients is difficult, as psoriasis benefits from sun exposure, which is harmful in LE, and systemic corticosteroids, indicated in LE, may produce severe psoriasis rebounds. It is known that antimalarial drugs that are helpful in LE are contraindicated in psoriasis 1. I am not sure what. P. A. is. I personally do not use plaquenil hydroxychloroquine for psoriasis as it has been link with causing flare or outbreak for psoriasis. I would recommend to choose other DMARDs or biological esp there are a lot of choices now.

The use of Plaquenil may cause a severe flare of psoriasis. Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take Plaquenil, the most commonly prescribed antimalarial.

What Is Plaquenil? Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is available in generic form. What Are Side Effects of Plaquenil? Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. This is a case where Plaquenil likely triggered new-onset psoriasis in a patient who was genetically susceptible. There are several other drugs that would likely be beneficial for both diseases by virtue of their anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive effects, namely, acitretin Soriatane.

My Take on New Ocular Screening Guidelines for Plaquenil. Once retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine occurs, it is thought that the retinal changes are permanent and the disease can progress even if hydroxychloroquine is stopped for 1 to 3 years. Newer techniques for evaluation of retinal disease have been developed and these techniques can detect retinal toxicity earlier.
