  1. What does plaquenil do to the immune system

I started on it just less than 2 weeks ago, and I'm surrounded by ill people at work and already have a bit of a cold (nothing severe). it is "milder" than a lot of the other dmards in terms of side effects and activity x It is listed as having a mild immunosuppressant effect in my book on RA, but one of the reasons for the blood tests is to check that your immune system is not being suppressed too much (eg checking your white blood cell levels), so you shouldn't be completely vulnerable. Even after several years of taking lots of drugs I've not found any difference in the number of colds etc I get, and loads of people on here are teachers etc who get a lot of exposure to colds and coughs without too much problem.

Chloroquine phosphate fowlr Can you take methotrexate without plaquenil

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis, prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long- term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Mar 23, 2014 I doubt it is the Plaquenil affecting your immune system, but the actual Lupus itself as it can affects the white blood cells and lower them so we get every infection going. You need to speak to your rheumy for more clarification in your case. Plaquenil is an antirheumatic drug that helps to modulate an overstimulated immune system and decrease pain and inflammation. It also shown effective in hitting cystic forms of Borrelia burgdorferi and alkalizing the intracellular compartment making antibiotics more effective.

Polly Thank you both, I thought it shouldn't be too bad and that it's pretty mild in comparison to other drugs. Always better to be well informed and I remember the consultant saying its bit a bad time of year to start on it as I've missed all the bugs round Christmas time so thought there may be a slim chance of it being suppressed. But do look after yourself, and make sure you eat well and don't get too tired as if you have a cold already you need to pamper yourself a bit more than you would have before RA.

Plaquenil and Immune system disorder - a study from real-world data. Summary Immune system disorder is found among people who take Plaquenil, especially for people who are female, 50-59 old, have been taking the drug for 5 - 10 years, also take medication Enbrel, and have Pain. But you can’t even compare it to the only other things I have to treat lupus—prednisone, where 100 percent of people get side effects, or immunosuppressive drugs, which suppress the immune system, potentially causing infections, low blood counts, and liver toxicity. Jun 13, 2019 Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a drug originally used to prevent or treat malaria. Malaria is a serious but rare disease caused by bites from infected mosquitos. Now the drug is used to treat inflammatory diseases. This type of disease occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own healthy tissue.
